Running SmartMapper
SmartMapper can be started from ReplaceMagic, from its own window, or from the command line. The options are the same everywhere.
Main settings

Setting |
Meaning |
|
Database / Connection |
The ReplaceMagic database holding the scan (SQL Server, SQLite or MySQL) |
|
RunID |
The scan to process |
|
Action |
What to do – Full run generates the keys; the others are reports and review tools |
|
Per-file mode |
Generates keys per document (recommended) – see below |
|
DocID mode |
Special mode for converting links into Document-ID links; not used in a normal migration |
|
Trial docs |
Number of documents to generate keys for; blank or 0 = all (set automatically in trial) |
|
Cap |
Diagnostic option that limits how many rows are read per table. For quick technical checks only – it cuts documents in half and must never be used for a real key generation |
Per-file mode (recommended)
With per-file mode enabled, each key is tied to the document it came from. This gives you:
- Correct results when the same link text means different things in different folders – a link Report.xlsx in two different folders points at two different files, and each document receives its own key.
- Conversion of same-folder links.
- The ability to repair documents after they have been moved.
Without per-file mode, SmartMapper produces one global key set for all documents. This is simpler but cannot distinguish between identical link texts in different locations.
The run
A full run passes through six stages, reported as it goes:
- ID index – prepares the document inventory used to resolve ID-based links
- Resolve – turns every link into a complete, unambiguous address, followed by the mapping rules check, which may add suggested rules
- Map & generate – applies the mapping rules and produces the Search/Replace keys
- Optimise – removes duplicates and flags ambiguous patterns
- Validate – simulates every replacement against every link to detect damage
- Confidence – computes the final quality figures
You can cancel at any time; nothing is left half-applied.
